Fueling Your Flock Through the Change

Fueling Your Flock Through the Change

Welcome back to the Egg Brigade Fall Blog Series! As the days shorten and the chill of autumn settles in, our backyard flocks have special nutritional needs. This season is a critical time for feather growth during the annual molt, maintaining egg production, and building up reserves for the colder months ahead.

You already know that Egg Brigade's dried Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) are a powerhouse treat, rich in protein, essential fats, and that coveted calcium boost. But how do you best integrate them with your chicken's main feed and other favorite supplements? Let’s talk about the proper ratios and nutrient facts for the perfect Fall mix!

Why BSFL are a Fall Essential

Before we dive into the mix, let’s quickly recap why BSFL are made for autumn:

  • Protein for Molt: Dried BSFL boast an impressive ~40-50%

  • Crude Protein content: Molting —the process of replacing old feathers— requires a significant protein increase. Adding BSFL helps your hens bounce back to a full, glossy coat faster.

  • Essential Fats for Energy & Warmth: With 20-35% Fat (including beneficial lauric acid), BSFL provide a dense source of energy. This is crucial for maintaining body temperature and activity as temperatures drop.

  • The Calcium Advantage: A key benefit is the excellent Calcium-to-Phosphorus ratio (often around 2:1), which is ideal for bone health and strong eggshells. This can be especially helpful if your layers are still producing eggs.

3 Optimal Fall Feed Mixes

Integrating BSFL is easy, but moderation and balance are key. Think of BSFL as a potent supplement, not a complete replacement for your flock's regular layer feed. Research suggests that a moderate inclusion of BSFL (10-30% of the total diet) can be highly beneficial.

Here are a few ways to mix Egg Brigade BSFL into your flock’s daily routine:

1. The Core Layer Feed Boost (The Daily Sprinkle)

This is the simplest way to add a nutrient punch to your chickens' primary diet.

Complete Layer Feed

Base daily feed intake

Provides balanced essential nutrients (protein, vitamins, minerals)

Egg Brigade BSFL

10% (initial) – 30% (target) of daily feed intake

High-quality protein (40-50%) for molt and a great Calcium boost.

The Mix: Simply measure out your chicken's daily layer feed ration. Then, sprinkle a small, measured amount of BSFL over the top of the feed or mix it in. For a small flock (6-8 birds), a generous handful of BSFL per day is usually sufficient to hit the target without over-supplementing. If a flock is new to BSFL, begin the ratio at 10% and graduate to 30% over several weeks.

Nutrient Note: This ratio ensures your birds still get the balanced vitamins and minerals from their commercial feed while leveraging the high protein and fat content of the BSFL.

2. The Molt and Feather Power-Up (The Mid-Day Treat)

When your flock is in a heavy molt, increasing protein is a top priority. This mix uses supplements to provide extra calories and key nutrients.

Nutritional Role

Egg Brigade BSFL

2 parts

The ultimate 40-50% protein source for rapid feather growth.

Oats or Scratch Grain

1 part

Provides carbohydrates and fiber for sustained energy and warmth.

Pumpkin Seeds (Ground)

1 part

A natural source of zinc and other minerals that support skin and feather health.

The Mix: Offer this high-value mix in the afternoon as a treat, or "supper." Grind the pumpkin seeds lightly to aid digestion and mix them thoroughly with the BSFL and oats.

Nutrient Note: This ratio favors the high protein of the larvae, balanced by the carbs from the grain for necessary energy during the demanding molt period.

3. The Cold-Weather Energy & Mineral Treat

As winter approaches, your chickens will need more calories to stay warm. This is a great, warm blend for those chilly mornings or evenings.

1 part

Fats (20-35%) and Protein for internal heat and maintenance.

Cooked Rice or Pasta (Plain)

2 parts

Easily digestible carbohydrates for a quick energy burn to stay warm.

The Mix: Cook the rice or pasta plain and allow it to cool slightly. Mix in the BSFL just before serving. The heat will slightly soften the larvae, making them even more appealing! Offer in a shallow dish for 10-15 minutes, removing any leftovers to prevent spoilage.

Nutrient Note: This is a fantastic "energy bump" blend. The BSFL adds fat and protein, while the cooked carbs give immediate energy.

4. Herbal Supplements

The addition of various herbs can greatly increase the vitality of your flock, especially going into the Winter months. Egg Brigade’s Super Soldier Blend and Defense Blend are both great examples – read more here!

Fall feeding is all about transition. By consistently incorporating Egg Brigade BSFL into your flock's diet using the right ratios, you are providing the critical protein, fat, and calcium they need to successfully complete the molt, weather the cooling temperatures, and keep those quality eggs coming!
