Storm Recovery: How to Restore Routine After Bad Weather
Share
The storm has passed, the skies are clearing, and your flock is shaking off the last raindrops. Summer squalls and blustery fall weather can leave the coop looking a little disorganized — and your hens a little off their rhythm!
Just like kids heading back to school after a long break, your flock needs help getting back into a steady routine. With a little care and a few smart steps, you can restore calm, comfort, and productivity.
Step 1: Check the Coop and Run
Start with a quick inspection. Look for:
- Loose panels or roofing
- Standing water or muddy spots
- Downed branches or debris that could hide pests
A safe, clean space is the foundation for a smooth recovery!
Step 2: Ease Back Into Routine
Bad weather can throw off egg-laying schedules and daily habits. Help your flock feel secure by:
- Opening the run at the same time each morning
- Offering feed in their usual spot
- Encouraging dust baths and foraging when conditions are safe
Routine is comforting for chickens — the sooner things feel familiar again, the better.
Step 3: Give a Nutritional Boost
After a storm, your hens may burn extra energy staying warm or drying off. Treat them to Egg Brigade’s USA-grown Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) — a protein- and calcium-rich snack that supports:
- Stronger eggshells
- Feather health
- Energy for getting back to normal
Think of it as their “back-to-school lunchbox” — full of the good stuff they need to thrive.
Step 4: Lift Their Spirits
Once everything’s secure and the hens are fed, bring a little fun back to the coop:
- Scatter BSFL for a mini treasure hunt
- Add fresh hay for scratching and exploring
- Hang cabbage or herbs for pecking
These small activities help shake off stress and spark curiosity again.
Step 5: Keep an Eye Out
Over the next few days, watch for:
- Signs of illness or injury
- Slower egg production
- Damp bedding or spoiled feed
Your hens will likely bounce back quickly, but a little extra attention goes a long way.
Back on Track
Storms might shake things up, but with some care, patience, and a few extra treats, your flock will be back in routine before you know it — feathers dry, eggs in the nest, and curiosity restored.
